I was blown away by this. I thought a black man had written this gorgeous, thoughtful novel about personal space and one's right to define it any way they wanted.

No, it was a white man with an unfortunately moderate writing success. It was one of the best books I've read in a while, and I've had back to back to back awesome books.

It's an impressive debut which should belong to the library of modern classics. Yet another valentine from the gods of bibliophilia that leaped at me from the clearan I was blown away by this.

Yet another valentine from the gods of bibliophilia that leaped at me from the clearance bin of an used book store. George Dawes Green's treatment of a mentally ill self-exiled homeless man reveals and romanticizes a highly intelligent and self-made man.

Quite the opposite of the usual treatments of the homeless, and when Romulus embarks on his ill-fated and ultimately redeeming journey away from his comfort zone to investigate the death of a boy dumped near his cave.

He meets all sorts of people in his quest for the truth, and although he does discover the truth, he finds out more about himself.

The conclusion of The Caveman's Valentine is a masterpiece within a masterpiece, its structure like that of a joke, which is funny because of that which contrasts, but what occurs is not a joke but a revelation, a larval collision of soul and mind exploding soundlessly into the night like an eclipse of moths.

Rom stays in contact with his family and they come to his cave annually to throw him a birthday party. They still love him, they just cannot understand his paranoia about the imaginary Stuyvesant.

Matthew convinced Rom that Leppenraub was behind the murder, and Rom went to his daughter Lulu and another police friend of his, Detective Jack Cork, to try to help them in their investigation.

The problem is, what Rom believes and what is reality are often inconsistent. Rom decides to take matters into his own hands, forcing him to enter the real world he chose to leave years ago.

He begs a suit from a businessman he often sees walking past and the businessman also offers Rom a shower, shave and all-around clean-up when he realizes Rom is more than just a dirty bum.

An interesting mystery and an unusual hero lead this strong story, a great debut novel. Feb 17, Robbie rated it liked it. I first saw the film that was based on this book many years ago and fell in love with it.

It never occurred to me to read the book, though, because thrillers aren't my usual thing. A few years ago, a friend recommended the book to me without realizing that the movie even existed.

This put it on my radar, but it still took me a while to decide that I was in the mood to read it. I enjoyed the book. The author does a great job of presenting the story from the titular character's perspective without I first saw the film that was based on this book many years ago and fell in love with it.

The author does a great job of presenting the story from the titular character's perspective without making the story too disjointed.

The descriptions of the settings and characters were great, although most of the characters were a little flat; they'd have one or two interesting characteristics that made them part of the story but there wasn't much to them beyond that.

A dog is presented with as much color as Rom's daughter, Matthew, or Leppenraub and, in saying so, I'm not complimenting the authors decision to give depth to the dog.

The discussions of visual art and music are decent, though not terribly exciting if you are an art or music lover. If the setting of the piece among a community of artists is interesting, the book doesn't really do terribly much to play on the idea of the arts scene.

That said, it is a thriller and it is an effective one. Using a mentally ill, homeless man as the protagonist made the fact that nobody believes him when he tries to get help solving the murder or protecting his own life very believable.

The scheme that he uncovers, too, is reasonably believable within the arts community in which it is set. Overall, I'd say that this is a very readable, clever, and engrossing book even if it lacks any real depth.

Aug 14, Sara Beresford rated it really liked it. I loved this book. I bought it at the Unchained storytelling event in Athens earlier this year.

It was written by the man who founded The Moth. For some reason it took me awhile to pick up this book, but once I did, I couldn't put it down. Apparently a film was made based upon this book starring Samuel L.

I bought it from the author himself and I'm glad I hadn't read it first because I would have started blabbering on in a starstruck manner. But I still managed to come across as an idiot.

Here's how: I had just seen Dan Kennedy tell a story that night, and for those of you who are fans of The Moth, you know him.

Anyway, there is something about Dan that strikes a chord with me because he's such an honest goofball.

He's from Seattle, and he's not that much older than I am, so there's something there that I relate to with him.

So, I said to George when I was talking to him before signing the book that I really enjoyed the show. He asked me who in particular I enjoyed. I told him that I could kind of relate to Dan Kennedy.

If you know who I"m talking about, you will know what a ridiculous statement this was. George Dawes Green. Mar 03, Melinda rated it really liked it Shelves: mystery-suspense , fiction.

His attempts to get information and make him self socially presentable, his relationships with his cop daughter and another cop, a bankruptcy lawyer and wife and a beautiful artist are all fascinating.

Full of well-drawn, interesting, and quirky characters, none moreso than Romulus Ledbetter, the protagonist, a Julliard-trained musician, a pianist, who has schizophrenia and is living in a cave in a park in New York City.

Like little moths, and they'll beat the hell out of you with their wings! The clues that lead to a killer.

I really don't know exactly what to think about it. As of now, all I really know is that I didn't enjoy it. I wasn't particularly thrilled by the story, nor was I enamored by the style.

It was also maybe the first time I have seen Samuel L. Jackson in a movie, and didn't love his performance.

His acting was more than just schizophrenic, it was off the wall and over the top. I'm guessing that's what the director wanted because the whole movie came off like that as well.

It had all the makings to be a truly intelligent thriller. I liked the initial idea for the movie, but by the thirty minute mark, I was less then thrilled by what was going on.

By the hour mark, I knew this wasn't going to be good. And by the hour and a half mark, I really just didn't care anymore. Romulus is a genius musician who attended Juilliard.

Now he lives in a cave in a New York City park. He's also crazy as fuck, seeing images and talking to his ex-wife like she is present.

He also has a variety of crazy theories. When he finds a frozen corpse in a tree outside of his cave, he starts expressing what he thinks happened, to the police; one of which is his daughter.

Obviously they think he is crazy. He decides to try to investigate what is going on by himself. The Caveman's Valentine isn't an unwatchable movie, it's just one that I couldn't particularly get into and enjoy.

I normally can enjoy these psychological, mind fuck movies, but this one was either too much or too little. I haven't really decided yet.

I still can't really organize my thoughts on this one.

The CavemanS Valentine See a Problem? Video

The Caveman's Valentine Trailer The CavemanS Valentine

There are enough confusions to keep the viewer guessing. All in all a great film. It's a very nice film with a suspenseful and mysterious plot about an insane homeless man who once was a talented piano player which solved by himself a crime scene.

The plot starts being very strange and puzzling, because we watch the happenings through the insane guy's mind, and everything seems to be a bit confusing.

However, that's the best part of the movie to me! It's mysterious, unexplained, bizarre and has some strange scenes which pass only inside his mind of pure delusion, and shot in dark and surreal way.

Great cinematography, I must say! The acting is also brilliant, especially by Samuel L. He's an excellent actor and one more time he proves it, as a great part of this film is just his acting work!

The film has a great soundtrack as well! I hadn't heard of this movie so far so it was a very good surprise to me. The reviews are up and down for this one, and it may be because of the psycho scenes.

As the first reviewer noted, it does a good job of getting the viewer inside the psycho's head, but if you aren't into strange scenes with psychotic visions, confusing sequences, etc you might find it tedious.

These aren't the crisp psycho scene like in The Cell, but more like visions. The plot is good, and the supporting acting is adequate. But watching this nut stumble around trying to catch a crook might be too off the wall for some people.

I'd give it a 6. This is easily one of Samuel L. Jackson's greatest movies of his great career. The movie itself is very chilling and has almost a depressing tone to it.

Any one who can appreciate great acting and an incredible plot should see this movie. There's no mystery here pizzamonkey 2 August I would have to agree with the review of PC Dean.

It seems that Hollywood felt that they had to generate a reason to make this film. I have these horrible visions of a production meeting with people trying to figure out how they were going to be able to make a quality film and still dupe the public into going to see it.

Then deciding the solution was writing in a half hearted mystery theme. Overall I liked the movie and applaud it's approaching the subject of mental illness.

I just wonder about the attempts at main stream "popularizing" that went along with it. Poe 5 February Sam J.

Where the "bleep" are all his awards? It's a murder mystery. No not that kind. The sleuth here is mental case who lives in a dome of rocks in a park.

Except he's a musical genius who is in constant battle with some kind of mind controlling rays from a Capitalist Wizard named Inversol or something like that abiding in an ivory tower over looking the city.

Wait, wait No, wait Except he isn't mental, is he? Society is mental or is it what passes for society? Or not. And it's about art using the human psyche as its canvas and when art wanders over a cliff.

Can you imagine an actor the caliber of Samuel Jackson reading this script and nodding? It's as wacky as its title. But watch him do it, watch him bring Romulus Ledbetter to life.

The movie would have been decent with another talented actor in the lead but SJ set the character on fire and set it in concrete.

The film's problem? Samuel Jackson's performance elevated the bar to a level the rest of the movie didn't see coming.

So while the movie is better than it should have been, it seems to miss its bullseye at the same time. With just a bit of tweaking, anticipating the Romulus Ledbetter SJ would create, "The Caveman's Valentine" would have found itself sharing shelf space with genuine classics.

A crazy, misunderstood man Romulas Ledbetter Jackson hiding from his personal demons, lives in a cave in New York. Musician turned recluse, believes the Chrysler Tower has some sort of watch over him.

He finds a young man who is frozen to death on a tree! Another homeless man who is a friend of the deceased and Romulas gives him some information that sparks of a conspiracy that the young man was murdered by David Leppenraub Colm Feore a prominent art photographer.

How can he prove this though? His own daughter who is a police officer and the authorities do not believe someone they all think is insane.

Romulas does some investigating of his own and then begins the intrigue of the film. Samuel L Jackson puts on an easily Oscar winning performance in this excellent spine tingling whodunit thriller.

I saw this movie at Sundance and was completely blown away. Sam Jackson gives the performance of his career. Kasi Lemmons' directing is beyond fabulous.

Quite simply, this is one of the best films I have ever seen. With so many goofy movies about mental illness, finally here's a film that really understands its subject.

As usual, Samuel L. This time as Romulus Ledbetter, a homeless, schizophrenic musician, who helps the cops solve a murder mystery. Sounds far-fetched?

It is, but the film manages to be successful in bringing the viewer into Romulus's world. While some concepts like that are interesting, the story itself is as whacky as the main character.

Overall, this movie moves pretty slowly for a murder mystery and I predict that people will either love it or hate it.

AlabamaWorley 21 December The crime story aspect of the story is just filler. The movie is a brilliant exploration of a psychotic's delusional world.

It was often difficult for me to realize which was "real" and which was part of Romulus' fantasy life. Aunjanue Ellis as Sam Jackson's daughter is very strong.

A lot of the imagery, particularly of Romulus' moth-seraphs, is very beautiful. Great job, director Kasi Lemmons. I look forward to her next film!

The Caveman's Valentine seemed intriguing. In my mind Samuel L. Jackson has done a good job of picking his roles and by pairing up with Kasi Lemmons again I figured this one would be a success.

Did I expect too much? I don't think so. This film lacks any kind of reasonable plot development. The obvious twists and turns are cheap rip-offs of today's modern suspense thrillers.

I can only assume the book is a wonderful telling of a man's personality disorder because the film is not. What convinced these great Hollywood talents to partake in such a poorly conceived film is beyond me.

Wait for the remake. It was really interesting for me to see how Samuel Jackson would act in the role of a bum and not just an ordinary one, but a guy who is beyond the mental stability.

His acting was amazing! The way he yield at people with his all mighty voice, the way he confronted with them is just an unforgettable segment. The plot of the movie was also really interesting, it was a breeze of a philosophy overview about the way people should live and how they should concentrate themselves only on the truth and fight for it until the end.

A crazy guy, who was called The Caveman, and who was treated as an object and it was a swamp of jokes and fun all the time, because of his clothes and attitude, proved to the world that we should only follow our only way which was written by our own hearts.

All of the other supporting actors did their job good, but as I said before, Jackson stole the show for a thousand time, again.

I would really recommend this movie if you are in the mood of seeing something special, that will really touch you in the emotional way, to see how a musical genius, ho can be really connected to Bach or another legendary composer, talking to himself, and to his wife, who only rides on his boats of dreams, defines the proportion of how we should breath our own air.

This movie made me thinkhow many of the homeless in my large urban city probably have hidden talents too that are lost to the rest of us and hidden under the mental illness?

One can feel the pain of the daughter at having "lost" her father and the pain of the ex-wife who obviously had a difficult time when living with him.

Jackson does a credible acting job as usual and has had a consistent acting career. The sound track is fabulous. More Info.
