Reverend Cotton Marcus is at the head of this scary film. He is a disillusioned preacher who has long ago lost his faith following the birth of his seriously ill son.
He has been performing exorcisms for quite some time on many people who are supposed to be afflicted by possession.
The only issue is that these exorcisms are fake, and the people he performs them on are not truly possessed. The reverend is horrified when he hears of the death of an autistic boy during an exorcism and agrees to expose the falsehoods behind the whole ordeal with the help of a documentary film crew.
He randomly picks an exorcism to oversee for the purpose of the film, hoping to expose the falsehood behind the claims and the exorcism itself.
The family he has chosen are a family of rural farmers who claim that their daughter is possessed and is slaughtering their farm animals.
Equipment is planted at the family's farmhouse so that the reverend can later prove to them that the entire thing was false.
The reverend and the film crew leave feeling that all will be all right now and feel that the young girl has a mental condition, not a possession as her parents felt.
Yet later that night the young girl that received the exorcism, Nell, shows up at the reverend's hotel room seeming not quite right.
She is taken to the hospital but is found to be physically fine. They find out from the hospital later that Nell is pregnant, and they accuse her father of incest.
But is this really the case? Thank you again Amazon Prime. One person found this helpful. I've found several movies in the same vein I like better, "Cloverfield," "Monsters, "Troll Hunter" to name a few.
I've found many I did not, like "Paranormal Activity. The ending is some what ambiguous, like the "Blair Witch Project," but it is a hell of a ride getting there!
I'll have to admit that I'm surprised by the large number of negative reviews that there are for this movie.
Looking through some of the more negative reviews, the ending is what seems to be bothering people which I am trying not to give away. However, this is a horror movie!
What kind of ending did people expect? At one point, the viewer will be convinced that the possessed girl is just mentally ill.
However, some pretty extreme things will occur that will lead you to question this! This prompted one reviewer to write, "Loved the idea of revealing the scam which is religion, but then they dropped the ball at the end.
Why would anyone expect it to be any other way? This is an exorcism movie! If you go into this movie with an understanding of what you are watching, then you will not be disappointed.
The acting is great, the documentary format is done convincingly, the horror elements are intense at least for a PG film , and the storyline is far superior to many other exorcism movies that are out there.
This is a horrible movie. If I wanted to watch a documentary, or crooked preachers I can do it anytime on live tv and not cost me a thing.
I couldn't finish watching it, I was so bored and disappointed. I watched the second half and it was really good. I don't know it reminds me of Zappa's House of a thousand corpses, it was a horrible movie then he put out The Devils rejects it was a good movie.
It seemed to me that they were trying to make up for the horrible pain they put us through with the first movies.

This film was released during the "mocumentary era" when every other filmmaker seemed to turn to handheld in an attempt to create a feeling of authenticity.
Nevertheless, it works well here, as there's more than enough happening to keep you largely in the dark as to what's real, what isn't, and what the hell is going on.
It's by no means a classic, but it's certainly worthwhile. It should be noted that a lot of people hate the ending. Personally, I loved it.
Report abuse. A bit of a strange film about a fake exorciser who finds a real possessed girl in the backcountry,some disturbing scenes but little or no blood or gore,with a great ending scene where it all makes sense,if you like supernatural themes you might enjoy it!
Had to pause this half way through to find a sofa to hide behind. Pretty damn scary stuff. Film is about a documentary team following the Exorcist who shows the viewers his "tricks" a people who need an exorcism are only in need of help because in their heads they only "think" thy are being possessed.
However things take a more sinister turn when he thinks he solves a case yet not all is what it seems.
Great film. I have read book on exorcisms and a few things that I read before were actually put in the film. Loved it. Back to top.
