What must be understood is that this movie is written for native Chinese speakers with a working understanding of the movie's background culture. Unfortunately, the movie's subtitles do not even come close to replicating the clever play on words in the Chinese dialect in some parts of the movie.
In addition, a part of the humor comes from the distinguished intonations with which the characters speak for instance the cops have a intentionally distinct accent - so even had there been stupendous translating, a part of the film is still missing.
I would say the jokes are the main selling point of this movie, as the story is simple in nature. However, unlike many of Stephen Chow's movies, this story seems to wrap the jokes together into a logical sequence.
So in the end, you don't feel like you've just watched a comedy show, but you also get that feeling of elevation of intellect derived from some kind of "truth" being enunciated.
The super-rich and silly mustachioed Liu Xuan overpays for land in the Green Gulf. His rival, Cheng, thinks it will bankrupt him: "Green Gulf is a conservation area with plenty of dolphins.
Otherwise, why would I sell you that piece of crap land next to it? But first, a grand pool party to celebrate his new venture. His other rival, Miss Ruo-lan shows up and buys in.
They are just about to cement their new partnership when they are interrupted by a party-crasher. It's a young woman with make-up inexpertly smeared over her eyes and mouth, and wearing huge yellow galoshes.
No body watches where the young woman goes after that. But it is to a derelict container ship crashed into a cliff near Green Gulf. It has a huge hole in its hull and a waterfall cascading down inside.
When she gets there, Shan, for that is her name, reveals that the galoshes are a clever disguise. For she is a mermaid, one of many.
And they seek revenge on Liu Xuan for despoiling their ocean. Shan is their honey trap. We much enjoyed "The Mermaid".
There is so much humor in this film, much of it slapstick. There are also sly puns and visual jokes, such as Xuan's "shark-skin" suit.
There are laugh-out-loud moments, such as when Shan gets into Xuan's office and tries to kill him with a sea urchin and then tries to stab him as he Elvis-dances.
Or when her best friend and mentor, and octopus, spies as a chef. The parodies of toadying and celebrity worship are a bonus.
And I can see why; she is beautiful, elegant and curvy. And in this film she brings out her badness. The movie is 94 minutes long. If you buy it on BluRay, you have the option of watching it in 2D or 3D.

Coming to this movie, the director tries to show us how we humans have fraught ourselves with the dogma that we own all the things created by the GOD.
We have wrung the life out of everything only to hoard ourselves with riches and wealth and have obstinately vilified the rights of other beings to live on Earth.
The titular character Mermaid seeks revenge to save her species from the cusps of extinction. She goes out on a mission to establish this by killing the owner of a reality tycoon who himself is lost in wretches of wealth and seeks to convert an island into a theme park.
The movie is defined by the line " what is the use of all the wealth when there is not a drop to drink and fresh air to breathe".
It shows how the tycoon changes his heart and saves the lives of Mermaids. Our heart goes out for the Mermaids when they are mercilessly hunted down and we then come to realize that is what we do in our daily lives- kill other species for our greed and meaningless satisfaction.
But at the end of the day all we need is a soul which will love us with all our pitfalls and share with us this ugly world.
