Yes, I read the reviews, including the ones that complain about the gore on display. Of course you know the old adage about "there's no such thing as bad publicity", so It made me even more curious, and i thought I'd take a peak inside this debut Season If anyone would have told me that there could be a "Hannibal Lecter" without Anthony Hopkins I would have laughed at them.
All have been exceptionally well played. That said Lawrence Fishburne provides perhaps the most detailed and dynamic Crawford to date.
Hugh Dancy does an exceptional job giving depth to Will Graham. However it is Mads Mikkelson who ultimately has to carry the show and to do this he has to show that he is every bit as chilling as the Hannibal portrayed by Hopkins.
Mikkelson does a superb job establishing the eccentric, soulless, monster hiding in plain sight as a respected psychiatrist.
Of course the weekly unsubs also make this a chillingly delightful show. It is a great psycho-thriller and Mikkelson and Dancy and Fishburne have great chemistry.
I can't believe I almost quit watching after the first few minutes. But I gave it a chance and man did it ever get good. First of all, if you're expecting a nice,calm, TV show, keep going.
Hannibal is violent. Very violent. And gory. I've never watched Dexter so I don't know if it's as bad or worse, but.. The acting:I have to commend everyone involved with his show-the casting tis perfect-and I was surprised to find out Hugh Dancy is English!
The episodes move along well, and most storylines are wrapped up well, save for one involving a character's spouse, and a suspect guest star Lance Henriksen.
Just when you think things couldn't get any more insane, then there's the last few episodes-including the finale.

Also mads mikkelsen is probably the highlight of the show with his portrayal of the infamous cannibal Dr hannibal lecter I gave it 3 out 5 stars because this was not a series I could binge watch as its slow at times maybe just my opinion so I just watch about 1 or 2 episodes at a time.

He plays the character so well. Creepy yet strangely compelling! I love the way he invites people to dinner parties and is feeding them his victims.
Sitting there with an almost smug look on his face! While in the morgue his victims are stacking up with parts missing and they are all puzzling over the crimes.
Hugh Dancy is very good as well and i love how he deconstructs the murder scenes to get into the 'killers' mindset!
My only complaint is the extras do not contain the gag reel which apparently is on the American version!

Mads Mikkelsen is perfect as the debonair fastidious Hannibal, whose guests so appreciate the meals he serves. Again we know something they do not.
Hugh Dancy as Will is by no means overshadowed, his descent to near madness extremely upsetting - far more so than all the gory murder scenes depicted.

On DVD episodes seen in quick succession add enormously to the impact and help clarify fleeting sequences that earlier may have puzzled, fish-hooks included.
Grippingly done, with two magnificent performances and much to perturb. By the end of it all, not only poor Will is likely to be feeling the strain.
One person found this helpful. Every pun intended.. What can I say that has not been said before about this series. Not a lot I guess but it has been a long time since I have enjoyed and admired a TV series as much as this.
Negatives It is a little impeded by the need to complete a story arc in each episode, or certainly it felt that way in the early episodes.
I also prefer William Petersen's portrayal of Will Graham in Manhunter as well, Hugh Dancy can be just a bit too "twitchy" for my liking.
These are just minor points there is nothing wrong with Dancy, it is just Manhunter is one of my favorite films. Positives Excellent acting, impeccable design, intelligent scripting and certainly the best Lecter since a certain Dr Lecktor Brian Cox.
Fans of Manhunter and SotL should find a lot here to enjoy and the atmosphere of Gothic Gruesomeness is perfect for Thomas Harris's creation. Excellent work all round, bring on the second series.
For anyone buying the product it is worth noting that Blu Ray picture is excellent, but as others have pointed out the special features are very limited, if this is your thing I am sure there will a second release later with better features so a rental maybe more appropriate.
I did enjoy watching this but only once I made a conscious effort to separate the characters from the books and the film portrayals Anthony Hopkins will always be Hannibal to me to this tv series as otherwise the inconsistencies in plot, dialogue and character were too offputting.
As other people have commented some episodes were implausible ie how did the angel serial killer manage to commit suicide in the way he did with no help or pulleys?
And how did the elderley disabled serial killer make a giant totem pole of bodies on the beach when he could hardly walk? And so many serial killers active at the same time despite the fact they are supposed to be relatively rare.
But bizarrely one of the most irritating things for me was the way Hannibal handled a knife and fork at dinners etc. Hannibal a seemingly cultured and well educated man handled his knife and fork like a hillbilly not with the precision and refinement you would expect.

Deeper and more far reaching with its twists and side plots. More lavishly portrayed taking the viewer from urban to suburban settings, to forested country roads and homes, to the decadent old money vastness of the Verger estate complete with wispy fog, like a haunted house to the beautiful old world streets and churches of Florence Italy and the hills of Sardinia.
It has a better cast too. Hopkins of course is great but the true acting gem of this movie is Gary Oldman's portrayal of Mason Verger, the disfigured fourth victim of Hannibal Lecter and the only one who lived.
I can't say enough about this unforgettable character. The makeup job on Oldman is breathtaking as he immerses himself in the role and steals every scene he's in.
This movie could have stood on Oldman's and Hopkin's performances alone but there's more. Julienne Moore is flat out a better actress than Jodie Foster and doesn't overcook Clarice Starling's southern accent in the wooden manner in which Foster did.
Ray Liotta is always great as a smart-ass and is cast well here as a crooked law-enforcement agent who gets what's coming to him Scott Glenn was the second best actor in 'Silence of the Lambs', here he would be number five.
Spooky and subtly tense with tons of foreshadowing. Not for the squeamish or faint of heart, 'Hannibal' is top-notch. Just no. I thought Silence of the Lambs was pretty good, entertaining Hollywood blockbuster type deal, whatever.
But this movie is nothing like that. At first I was like, all right this is more intellectual and deep and weird. But no. After just 10 minutes I realized this movie is pretentious and stupid at the same time, which is probably an achievement, but I just don't care.
There are so many stupid things that all the different characters do, stereotyped behaviors of people we only see for a few minutes, it's just one big "who cares" moment after another.
And some of the reviews say it's gory and gross. No way. Nothing scary about it. I was waiting for stupid people to die so the next stupid scene could happen.
By half way I was just waiting for the movie to end, which it finally did in a forced way which ended up just being silly. David Mamet is way better than this, I thought.
And Ridley Scott, well, I'm not sure why he's still making movies. What was the last thing he did that was really good.
I mean Gladiator was okay. Alien and Blade Runner were great. So he's made two great movies a long time ago and one okay movie this century and the rest is blah.
And Alien Covenant, what is that garbage? That's truly gross, man, Alien:Cov is what comes out of Hannibal's rear end after eating someones frontal lobe for dinner.
It was a big disappointment compared to the original. The first thing you notice is that Hannibal had a much different tone to it than Silence of the Lambs.
He has a disfigured face due to his run in with Lecter and acts very creepy. He wants revenge upon Lecter.
Then the violence is much more graphic such as a video tape of Lecter biting the face of a nurse. Finally, the movie is mostly cat and mouse as Starling is in the U.
All together that makes Hannibal a total departure from Silence of the Lambs, and not half as good. There is none of the intensity of the original.
The scenes have been really well enacted. Some of the scenes might make you flinch, so if you are particularly squeamish, you might want to rethink your decision to watch this movie.
It is beautifully filmed with a talented cast. Anthony Hopkins reprises his character as the sophisticated Dr. Hannibal Lecter.
