Aug 17, As much as I've come to criticize certain movies for their poor quality, I've never been one to claim that even these movies, as bad as they may be, were easy to make.

I mean, maybe, I've made those claims before, but that was back when I was young and stupid. Now I'm not so young and only slightly less stupid, so I've made progress.

I'm not even gonna tell you what it was about, but it was just no good. I provided the camera and I "acted" in it, I had no real involvement in the scripting and only minor involvement in the editing of it.

So, honestly, I didn't really do any of the heavy lifting, so to speak. So, yes, again, even bad movies are hard to make. But just because bad movies are also hard to make does not mean that they should be excused or forgiven for their lack of quality.

And that's where a movie like Romina comes into play. I'm certain everyone worked hard in this movie, in front of the camera AND behind it.

But, once again, that's no real excuse for how bad this movie actually is. First things first is the whole Lago Cristal where the group of teens, I assume, go camping.

For those of you who don't know Spanish, this literally translates to Crystal Lake. Look, the Friday the 13th franchise has had some real stinkers, Jason Takes Manhattan for one.

Jason X is terrible but, from what I saw, it was entertaining in its badness. Again, even Friday the 13th isn't a perfect franchise.

It's beloved by many people, but it's not perfect. But, at the same time, once more, why invite the comparison?

A comparison that, ultimately, is not gonna end up being in your favor. It just seems incredibly stupid to do so.

It'd be one thing if your movie was, at the very least, good. This, obviously, was not good. Where do I even start with this?

I think the obvious point to start with would have to be the unlikable and insufferable characters. Not only are these people complete one-dimensional walking tropes.

There's the 'popular' couple, the 'good' couple, the pervert and the stoner. These characters are, obviously, never referred to like this, but you recognize the archetypes anywhere.

Not only are they archetypes, but they're also constantly arguing for, honestly, no real reason in the slightest. The first 'major' scene is these group of people all riding to the location where they're going camping.

This scene takes place in the car, is long and is just terrible. All of these people loudly talk over each other and it was difficult to keep up even with the subtitles on.

So I grew to hate these people immediately. And then, when they get to the campsite, nothing really happens.

More arguing, more yelling, more complaining. Gathering branches and sticks to start a campfire. Boring, uninteresting shit like that that I don't really give any fucks about.

It's all building to this moment where Ezequiel and Ramon, I think, rape this young lady that they've been perving on in the forest.

This lady, Romina, is friends with Diego, who's on this camping trip. The rape happens about 37 minutes into the film and it's halfway through this movie runs 74 minutes with credits.

The "horror", you could say, starts 44 minutes in, with less than a half hour left in the film. I put that in quotation, because the horror in this movie is poorly handled.

It's not built up to well and there's no real suspense, atmosphere or tension. The thing about this movie is that there's no reason for any of this to be happening.

It's violence for the sake of violence. If you're gonna make a horror movie, at least give me a reason for why all of this is happening.

The movie would have been better if all it was was just senseless violence with no plot. Cut out the first 44 minutes and have the last 30 minutes be the entire movie.

Nothing in the first 44 minutes ends up mattering in the long run, because people not involved in the rape end up dead anyway.

Diego, who was working with Romina all along, ends up saying that they all deserved it at the end but, again, there's literally no explanation for any of what's going on.

And if the violence was at least satisfying, but it's just not. People's heads are destroyed with branches and, when the branches hit, there's sort of a soft thud that goes along with it.

No bones crunching or gnarly sound effects like that. So even that aspect of the movie is completely wrong. There's no weight to anything.

It all looks and feels fake. And, another thing, this is a shitty and exploitative horror movie, but it's one that tries to be artful in how it's shot and the dissonant piano score is meant to give it a more sophisticated look.

Like it's meant to be something deep and complex instead of just a terrible and cheaply made horror movie. This is someone's film school project, as Roger Moore from Movie Nation mentioned in his blurb that's quoted on Rotten Tomatoes.

But, yes, this is someone's idea of trying to make a sophisticated horror movie and completely and utterly failing at it.

Putting a dress and a wig on a turd does not give it class and elegance. It's still a turd wearing a dress and a wig. Given that it's still a turd, it should stand to reason that it fucking stinks.

Same thing with this movie. It's a turd that's wearing a dress and a wig. I don't know who they think they're fooling, but this movie was just terrible.

I was gonna go for one star, but there's nothing about this movie that I liked, so half a star feels about right.

I don't know if this is better or worse than The Bye Bye Man. At least the aforementioned flick does a good job at justifying its existence, however shitty that existence may be.

This one doesn't do any of that. This is just a poor excuse for a movie and I feel dirty having spent 74 dreadful minutes on this.

If you want a quality horror movie, watch Cargo instead. This one will just offer nothing but mindless and pointless violence. Skip at all costs.
